What is Zaatar made of?

Updated: Jun 5

Not all Zaatars are equal

Whilst meeting with potential stockists today, we were interested to see that one village store already stocked zaatar. Until we read the label... and then we were disappointed!

It said 'zaatar' on the jar but the list of ingredients told a very different, cynical tale. In addition to the herb mixture that you might expect to see was an unwelcome interloper: wheat!

As the profile of zaatar spreads, more unscrupulous producers are diluting its famously pungent flavour with cheap, ballasting ingredients. Boosting profits whilst diluting the taste and depriving newcomers of the full, aromatic experience.

For the same price as this and other bland imitations, you could instead enjoy zaatar as it was meant to be, unpolluted by filler ingredients.

So, beware of (not so) cheap imitations and always check the label! And if you want to be sure of enjoying zaatar in all its glory, choose About Thyme.
